Michael Vartuli is a sculptor, ceramicist, and abstract portrait artist whose work focuses almost entirely on faces. He is driven less by the finished object than by the process itself—mixing color, shaping forms, building molds, and moving through each stage of transformation. He often stretches out the preparation and making, reluctant to let a piece go, drawn instead to the ongoing exchange between himself and the work. His masks and portraits emerge through this layered process, where experimentation and repetition matter as much as the final result.
