About
Gerry Albarelli is a writer, oral historian, editor, and teacher whose work focuses on transforming lived
experience into narrative.
He received his M.A. in Creative Writing from Brown University and has taught at Columbia University,
Sarah Lawrence College, and the New School.
He has conducted hundreds of interviews for major oral history projects, including work related to
September 11 and human rights.
“He conveys not only personalities, but the textures of their world—the nuance of language and detail.”
Editorial Work
He works with writers to shape memoirs and oral histories into fully realized books.
“A work in progress for decades… could not have come to fruition without Gerry Albarelli… intuitive,
precise, and deeply attuned to the work.”
“An expert ‘book doctor’—a master at dialogue, scenes, and structure.”
Teaching
My teaching focuses on helping writers move from observation to narrative.
“He pushed everyone to their limits… demanding close observation and lived detail.”
